BUCCLEUCH GUNDOGS - THE KENNEL FOR TRAINING & BREEDING GUNDOG CHAMPIONS

The Buccleuch Gundogs, part of Buccleuch Sporting, have long held a special place in the history of the Buccleuch Estates.

In the 1830’s, the 5th Duke of Buccleuch was one of the first people in Britain to appreciate the full potential of these naturally exuberant dogs.  Since he imported the first Labrador from Newfoundland, the Buccleuch Kennel has been home to generations of these wonderful animals.

Today, the Buccleuch Kennel is home to many champion gundogs who have won many prestigious accolades, including the British and Irish Springer Spaniel Championships, under the expert handling of David Lisett.

David has just returned from the Kennel Club’s 80th English Springer Spaniel Championship Stake 2009/10 winning 1st place with Buccleuch Jazz (read more).

Used mainly by gamekeepers on the Estates, these inspiring animals have displayed the strength, courage and tenacity of true champions to form the heart of the new Buccleuch Kennel, “Chapel”, which sits on the Queensberry Estate near Drumlanrig Castle (www.drumlanrig.com).

The dedicated team at Chapel is committed to helping ensure that these loyal and remarkable gundogs are well cared for and happy, in an environment which ensures that they thrive and grow under the teams expert care and guidance.

The Chapel team has pledged to help:

  • Ensure that the Buccleuch Labrador gundogs continue to flourish.
  • Introduce a carefully-monitored breeding programme for Cocker Spaniels.
  • Safeguard the existing Springer Spaniel strain.
  • Oversee a breeding programme and offer customers the opportunity to buy potential FTCh gundogs.
  • Train and establish some of these special gundogs to Field Trial standard.
  • Offer training programmes for gundog owners/handlers.
  • Provide a stud service from within the kennels for all these breeds.

Puppies will be available for sale (from 8 weeks), part-trained gundogs at the age of 8 months and fully-trained Field Trial gundogs from 18 months. Some successful Field Trial gundogs will also be offered for sale occasionally.
