the second day

Date: 01/05/2009

The second day we awoke to glorious sunshine and it stayed with us all day.  We had organised for a team of guns and ferreters to work the hills and find game for the retrievers in the group.

It is not everyday that you have new experiences in the shooting field but this day there were three.  The first was a shot rabbit making for a hole.  A dog caught a glimpse of it and retrieved it, but it also brought back a dead rabbit, coming back over a fence neatly to hand.  Quite a heavy mouthful!

To go one better than this, one of the Golden Retrievers lifted and brought back two of the dead rabbits lying shoulder to shoulder and to top all of that, one of the Labradors then brought back three rabbits tenderly to hand.

Some of the experienced dogs were retrieving the rabbits 200 – 300 yards over the dry stone walls, in ditches and up the hills.  For the less experienced dogs, we set up retrieves as the day went along with the shot game through water and grasses to suit their abilities.
